Succeeding at the Piano is a comprehensive method that will establish a student's musical foundation and love of piano playing. Note reading, intervallic reading, rhythm, technique, theory, and musicianship are consistently reinforced throughout.

Some highlights of the Lesson and Technique Book are:

1. In Grade 1, a multi-key reading approach is added to the traditional note reading with intervallic reading started in the preparatory level. This is a sure way for students to succeed!

2. Rhythm is learned like a language, naturally and easily when young. Students clap/tap and count aloud or speak lyrics, which further helps them to internalize all rhythm.

3. Technique is completely integrated with the lesson book so that students first learn six basic techniques. Students are encouraged to memorize the exercises so that they focus on watching their fingers, hands, and arms, as well as on listening to the sound they create. In this way, the ear always engaged. Teachers should encourage students to practice the exercises over a period of time until each technical gesture becomes a habit. Various Warm-ups for the Body help students understand how their bodies should feel when playing the piano.

The six basic techniques introduced in the Preparatory Level are reinforced:

-Finger, hand  and arm position, correct body alignment, posture, and general well-being at the piano

-the feeling of arm weight-being able to feel the arm "letting go" and relaxing

-Flexible wrists

-Two-note slurs

Weight transfer from one finger to the next

Rotation in the hands, wrists, and arms

Students are most successful when the lesson and Technique Book is used with the Recital Book and Theory and Activity book for a fun, well-rounded approach to learning music!

4. Terrific motivational music by multiple composers is featured.

5. Artistic illustrations along with fanciful lyrics stimulate imagination and creativity. The subject matter of the pieces is timeless.

6. "Before playing" and "After playing" points develop musicianship, practice habits, and listening skills.
