This collection of piano solos has been made for the more experienced pianist who will find it useful both as a general repertoire collection and as a group of solos intended for serious study. The committee appointed to select the music for this volume desired above all to select pieces possessing the highest musical quality and offering a wide variety in style, form, tonality, and rhythm, as covering all phases of technical development. Thus there will be found passages for legato work in long and short melody lines, together with secondary melody voicings and accompanimental parts; staccato passages in many phases and tempi; opportunity for the development of sensitive dynamic range; unlimited scope for clearly defined phrasing and articulation; fingering planned for achieving the most musical results; and the achievement of a balanced technical facility through the use of scale passages, broken and solid chords, arpeggio movements, double notes, trills and embellishments.
