Quick steps to Note Reading provides rote-trained students with an introduction to music notation. Each volume progresses in difficulty. Volume 4 introduces shifting and upper position work.
Quick Steps to Note Reading will provide rote-trained violin students with an introduction to musical notation. In addition, it presents an excellent means whereby traditionally-trained violinists who are just learning to read music. Rote-trained students possess technical skills far beyond their music reading ability, and will find that traditional string methods introduce reading skills too slowly to sustain interest. Quick Steps to Note Reading is an interesting vehicle which students may use to accomplish the reading of "note and rhythmic notation."
Notes in the text are introduced on one string at a time. Through the melodic lines which follow, the student is given time to recognize and respond to each note, to drill and master the recognition of the four pitches, and then to combine them in an ensemble with classmates or teacher. This procedure is then repeated on the next string without additional rhythm problems or string crossings. Students from every background will enjoy their feeling of accomplishment achieved through music reading.
Written explanations about the theory of notation have been omitted. They may be added at the discretion of the teacher, perhaps through the use of a music workbook for violin instructions to begin the reading program should be given orally and in the teacher's preferred vocabulary.
The pages in this text are designed to be uncluttered, with the notation clearly readable and proportionate to standard music literature. The format is unique in its appeal to either the very young or the older student
